COMMON ENGLISH PHRASES TO USE AT HOME FOR KIDS

When it comes to English, there are two types of words. One which has literal meaning and the other which has figurative meaning. Those are termed as idioms or phrases. Idioms and phrases are an important part of English speaking. They have a set standard and give a different edge to people who use them. Similarly there are many idioms and phrases which are used at home for kids. They are used in different situations like household, learning new things, eating, playing, sleeping, etc. Idioms and phrases help kids stand out from the crowd. If used at home, they will build confidence in them.

So without further ado, let’s see some phrases that are commonly used at home with kids.

Tidy up your room – if you want your child to know and learn to organise their rooms, you can use this phrase by saying “could you tidy up your room, please?”

Make the bed – if you want your child to learn how to fold blankets and settle the bed sheet, you can say “dear, can you please make your bed, when you get up?”

Walk the dog – if you have got a dog at home, you need to remind your child to take your dog for a walk. To say that, you can say “Did you walk the dog? Isn’t it getting late?”

Get dressed – if you are talking to your child to dress up and go outside, you can say “dear, you should get dressed. It’s time to go outside.”

When’s your homework due – it is necessary for a parent to keep a track of child’s homework. To ask the child about the deadlines of any assignment/ work, you can say “when’s your homework due?” If it’s due at a particular date, it can be said “well, it’s due tomorrow. Start working on it now”.

What’s for dinner – a child usually asks “what have you made/ cooked for dinner”? A correct way of asking would be “what’s for dinner?”

Take a few more bites – usually kids don’t finish their food. They tend to leave some part of food in their dishes. A parent can say “please, don’t waste food. Take a few more bites and finish it all.”

Go easy on him – if two or more children are playing, and if they get physical with the other kid, it might not be an actual fight but you are concerned, you can use “go easy on him/her”.

ComeOn! you can do it – to encourage your child, you can always say “you can do it”. Only a parent can motivate their kids to the fullest.

Sleep tight – when you wish your child “good night/ sleep well”, you can also use “sleep tight”.

Rise and shine – you can use this phrase with your child, when you wake up in the morning. The meaning of this phrase is “wake up and feel great”.

At the eleventh hour – when you explain to your child to do your work well in advance, you can say “don’t do your work at the eleventh hour”.

It’s time to brush your teeth – usually you guide your kids to brush their teeth at night too. So you can say “it’s getting late for bed. Go and brush your teeth.”
